6-6-05 Note from Lou Carpenter:  The JV Final Four Tournament was played at Veterans this past Saturday and St. Mary was once again victorious. They defeated a very strong St. Christopher team, 2-0 (?). St. Mary joins St. James (2001), St. Joseph (2002) & St. Bernard (2003) as the only other JV unbeaten/untied teams. Congratulations to Jim St. Amand of St. Mary & Rich Hurley and Vic Rosas of St. Chris.

Tom Skahan’s remarkable 3rd grade team from Assumption took 3rd place edging St. James-Gold and Andrew Tyler. St. Rose (Burns & Carpenter) and St. James-Blue (Blackwell & Parisi) provided the armed resistance to the others.

At Charter Oak Park, St. Bridget-Green went 4-0 and overcame Assumption-A and eighty degree temperatures to grab the St. Bridget R/R Shoot-Out. Congratulations to Ken Dash & Sue Kenefick of St. Bridget and Steve LaPrise of Assumption for a terrific tournament. St. Bridget-White & Pat Carroll just missed the Final by a tie-breaker.

Excellent competition was provided by St. Joseph (Fearnley), St. Bridget-Emerald (Bollash) and St. Bernard (Maresh).

For the second consecutive year, St. James fielded the Varsity Regular Season Winner. St. James-Gold went 7-0-1 to capture the season championship and the number one seed in the Final-4 Tourney. Congratulations to Matt O’Brien & Bob LeBlanc. This was an exceptional group of players! Tom & Sue Hayes’ St. Mary team went 6-0-2 to capture second place. St. Mary J.V. Team Continues Undefeated
After Weekend Play Results In Rousing Victories
Team Holds 8 - 0 - 0 Season Record

The St. Mary J.V. team emerged from a week of ran enforced rest to face an eye-opening 8 a.m. game on Saturday morning.  Despite the sleep filled eyes, the first game resulted in a 4-1 victory over the previously undefeated and highly competitive St. James/Gold team.  Fleet footed Michael Mahoney was the lead scorer with two goals, Clayton St. Amand and Josh Gosselin each scored one for the team. An outstanding defense marshaled by Michele Cabral, Alexis Vendetti, Nick Wrobel, Michael Edmiston, and Samantha Russo, who play both offense and defense, limited the opposition to one point despite their continued efforts to drive toward Peter Feeney who covered the SMS goal.

Flush with victory the SMS J.V. team returned to the field for their second game, this time against Assumption A. SMS was well on its way to what was soon to be a rousing 10 - 0 victory after third graders pressed their advantage and put Assumption on the defensive from the first whistle. Outstanding development amongst the novice players was noted with a scrappy offense mounted by Ryan Tierney and Coleman St. Amand.  Play included a particularly unique swan dive over the ball performed by Peter Dovaditis.  James Bordiere returned from the disabled list and joined his team to drive at Assumption's defense.  Fourth grader Anthony Lanzarone used more than muscle when he stopped a high velocity pass with his upper chest.  St. Mary went on to victory with three goals by Michael Mahoney, three from Clayton St. Amand including a follow up goal scored using his chest after the goalie blocked his first shot but failed to control the ball.  Peter Feeney sped past the opposition for two goals to his credit.  Nick Wrobel switched off defense to storm the opposition and score one for the team. Josh Gosselin used his speed to full advantage to race past the opposition to score from his defensive fullback slot.  Jordan Iskra covered the St. Mary net but saw little action on his end of the field.

The St. Mary Junior Varsity Soccer team has established itself as a force to be reckoned with after winning its first four games of the season.

April 16, 2005, The coed JV team consisting of third, fourth and fifth graders won its first two games last Saturday in back to back action against Assumption and St. Bernards. Both games ended in the scores of 6 to zero with the offensive powerhouse duo of fifth graders Michael Mahoney and Clayton St. Amand having nine goals to their credit.  A lightening fast Samantha Russo tempted fate and scored an off-side goal for the team.  Fourth grader Joshua Gosselin wove through the opposing defenders to score three.  Goalies Mariama Chaluparambil and Jordan Iskra formed a formidable defensive strategy lead by Nicholas Wrobel and Michelle Cabral.  The supportive defenders Michael Edmiston, James Bordiere, Giovanna Belletiere and Margaret Vasillopolous worked to a cheering crowd and kept both Assumption and St. Bernards at bay resulting in the 6 to zero wins.

On Saturday, April 23, 2005, Nail biting action opened the morning with a 6 to nothing win over St. Bridget. This game featured a fast-break for the goal and a superb assist from Coleman St. Amand to Anthony Lanzarone sadly it resulted in a heart-breaking bounce off the goal post. Versatile Peter Dovaditis worked both ends of the field serving dual roles as offender and defender which complemented the unstoppable fifth grade Nicholas Wrobel. Leading scorer was Josh with 3 goals. Clayton, Michael and Samantha each put one into the St. Bridget net.

Despite the downpour of rain, the St. Mary’s JV team returned to the fields for its second game of the morning with a well-groomed if not wet third grade defense. Practice paid off for the defenders with Kayshia Haughton, Deanna Worcester, Agata Harabaz and Alexis Vendetti relinquishing only two goals to St. Christopher. Peter Feeney served double duty as goalie and he scored one goal on offense. Michael Mahoney scored 3 and Josh Gosselin scored two for a final 6 to 2 victory.

Congratulations to the St. Mary J. V. team on a job well done

April 30th

St. Mary JV team won both of its games on Sat. with two hard fought games.  St. Joseph played very well against the undefeated St. Mary squad.  Finale score was 3-0 with Michael Mahoney scoring 2 goals and Clayton St. Amand scoring 1.  Jordan Iskra was solid in goal with all shots stopped.  Samantha Russo showed what she was really made of with her great passing and her unselfish play near the net.

St. Mary VS Assumption ended in a 4-0 win for St. Mary.  Peter Feeney came from the offence of the first game to play Goalie in the second game and came up with some great saves for St. Mary.  The Assumption players put some good shots on goal but they were stopped by Peter.  Goals for St. Mary were made by Clayton St. Amand with 3 goals and Michael Mahoney with one goal.
The offence of these two 5th graders is a real force.  Team spirit was displayed by a third grader James Bordiere who was injured in practice and still made the ride from Meriden to ECHS.
